“A well-conceived strategy living in the hands of unhappy, misdirected, misinformed people is a sure way to a slow and painful death. There is no comparison to being in the hearts and hands of energized, informed, and motivated people.”
Leading and Managing is no easy task. Many factors and elements are interplaying but I would say that ‘strategy and culture’ certainly are considered on top of everything. Therefore, we can say that successful organization wannabe should be one that has a ‘strong culture and clear strategy’. But we all know that such simple equation is better said than done.
In reality, culture alone is complex and strategy is a sure brain cracker. Thinking of strategy and culture related to leadership remind me again of Bolman and Deal’s book “The Wizard and the Warrior”. To be a warrior means to be good in strategy and to be relentless in executing it. While on the other hand wizardry in leadership is possessing the charisma and giftedness to capture the imagination, allegiance, and devotion of the members; it means understanding and strengthening the culture of the organization. Unfortunately, the two are not ready-made tools for most leaders. In fact, most only end up good at one and only a few determined and wise men develop the skills of both.
It is, therefore, imperative when it comes to organizational success that leaders understand and focus on the interdependence of strategy and culture. At the same time consistently examining their crucial role in it.
